Jeg anvender forskellige medier i samtidskunsten, grafik, skulptur og maleri. For mig er kunsten altid i udvikling, nysgerrighed samt lysten til at eksperimentere med materialernes muligheder, gør at processen er lang inden det færdige værk. Jeg arbejder konceptuelt indenfor et givent projekts område, og ender ofte med serier af værker med afsæt i samme undersøgelsesfelt. Udtrykket er semiabstrakt og værkerne går i dialog med hinanden både i deres udtryk og fysisk.
Foretrukne temaer er natur, mennesker og relationer. Gennem hele livet præges vi af hændelser og oplevelser, mange af mine værker tager udgangspunkt i erindringer. Særligt naturen har altid været omdrejningspunkt i mine værker og med et personligt udgangspunkt, centret omkring steder jeg har været. Jeg omsætter naturindtryk og stemninger, og ønsker at de fremstår som et organisk levende billedsprog med fragmenter og øjebliksbilleder.
 
Jeg navigerer i feminine, kunstneriske udtryk med æstetiske greb. Samtidig ønsker jeg at min kunst skal afspejle samfundsemner, og give lyst til refleksion og dialog. 

Annette Zierau – About My Artistic Practice

I work with paintings, sculptures and graphic prints. Often, the work emerges during the very process of my artistic investigation, in a simultaneous symbiosis of form and colour. Sometimes with an edge of humour. In this way, I create a picture in which the crucial points of existence, life, death, spirit, nature, culture, and history are important elements.

My practice is based on things and situations that make an impression on me: Reminiscences, nature, humans and historical experiences. I have a special eye for what may seem simple or not interesting, and I gladly pick up what others have thrown away in order to use it as a basis for a painting, a sculpture or a printing plate for a graphic sheet. Conceptually and thematically, I work within the area of a given project and often end up with series of works that are rooted in the same field of investigation.

The expression of my works is simple and rather abstract. I work with repetitions within a relatively strict and minimalistic framework, which to me forms an arabesque system of colour pictures in asymmetrical patterns. This is for instance manifested in work series consisting of uneven wood pieces that are partly painted with a minimum of colour tones. I install and adapt the elements into a collected work in a given room, with sensitivity towards the physical possibilities of the actual context in interaction with the currency and vibration of the work.

Previously, I worked mainly with paintings and drawings. During the last years, sculptures and graphical prints have been my main areas of interest. Some of the graphical works are monotypes which play with abstraction through an artistic expression as the motif is painted directly on the printing plate. In this way, you create an expression characterized by more volume and line softness. The sculptures often arise in working with found materials, the stories they have with them, and associations that I get in the process. Several of the new sculptures are site-specific and exhibited in interaction with paintings.
